Bulletin of the Shikoku Institute of Natural History NO.1
The occurrences of threatened or rare crab species of Kochi Prefecture are reported on the basis of specimens from intertidal mud-flats in Urado Estuary and Susaki Bay. In Urado Estuary,Camptandrium sexdentatum, one of the critically endangered species of Kochi Prefecture has been known only from the river mouth of Kokubu. However,Nada and the river mouth of Kuma seem to be new localities for the species. The specimens of C.sexdentatum from the river mouth of Sakura represent the first record of the species from Susaki Bay.Philyra pisum, one of the endangered species,is first recorded here from Nada and Kinuga-shima both in Urado Estuary, and Susaki Bay.The occurrence of Uca arcuata, one of the critically endangered species is reconifiemed in Susaki Bay.The six ovigerous female specimens of Halicarcinus orientalis represent the occurrence of the species for the first time from Urado Estuary, though it has been thought to be one of the data deficient species in Kochi Prefecture.Acmaeopleura toriumii is first recorded from the waters of Kochi Prefecture. These discoveries of them are discussed from the view point of species conservation.

An ecological study on hibernation of bats was made at Ryugado Cave, and other ten caves and shelters in central Kochi Prefecture from 1989 to 2002.In Kochi Prefecture,Ryugado Cave in Tosa-yamada Town has been considered to be only one hibernation place for bats, and only two of eight known species from the area,Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Miniopterus fuliginosus, utilized there for hibernation. However, the occurrences of the wintering individuals of two species,Rhinolophus cornutus and Myotis macrodactylus, were newly conifirmed at 11 study sites, though the dominant species and species composition differed among the sites. The number of individuals for each species and environmental conditions are also reported in some detail.
